skechers. yes, skechers!

if you were around in the 80s, when you hear skechers you might fondly recall the fashion sneakers and high-tops in crazy colors... like keds on acid.

now the 80s are in the past, and skechers has a "performance" shoe division that makes serious shoes for running and other activities. they are still crazy colors though. :)

my team has worked with skechers before as race sponsors, and some of my teammates are ambassadors for them or even sponsored by them individually. so while training for last year's marathon, a skechers rep offered free shoes & a singlet to all the VCTCers who planned to run the marathon. hooray!

the go run rides arrived a few weeks later. eye-popping neon pink! whoa! when i took them out of the box, i instantly felt how light they were. quite a change from the asics gt-2xxx i've been wearing since i started running (not the same pair, silly, but the same "make"). reluctant to get them dirty or to screw up my gait or throw a wrench into my training, i set them aside for a while before bringing them into my rotation.

when i first put them on, they felt snug. i think i tied them too tightly. with the heavier, stiffer shoes, i like my laces pretty tight to minimize shifting of the shoe, but i find that's not necessary with these lighter, more responsive shoes.

the first time i wore them, striding on the sole felt very strange as it has less drop and a different shape than i was used to. but i never noticed it once i broke into a run. these are so comfy, no slide or sock grab. they made my asics seem like concrete blocks! no blisters, no knee pain and once i learned to leave the laces loose, no constriction across the top of the foot. these feel springy and airy. post-marathon, these have become my #1 shoe.

then a few weeks ago, the skechers rep sent out an email saying they were sending me a pair of their new shoes to test. score! the new go run m2s arrived in the mail a little while ago, but since the weather has been crummy i didn't wear them out til today. they are a screaming melon color. jazzy! i was told this shoe has more midfoot support than the rides (my current faves). out of the box, i was mostly impressed by how lightweight they felt! looking at the soles, i could see the midfoot difference. the shoe also has a minimal drop and is shaped to encourage midfoot strike. like the rides, the m2s came with an alternate set of laces in a different color (ivory).

putting them on, i felt the mouth was too small to allow an easy slide-in. the tongue is attached to the upper almost all the way down. though this is great for keeping the tongue in place, it's not great for getting the shoe on without scrunching up my socks. this should be less of a problem in warmer weather when i switch to thinner socks too. once on, i thought the fit of the shoe was good. these are so light and flexible, very comfortable. no rubbing at the heel or top of foot at all, and the toe box is very roomy.

about a mile into my 3-mile run today, it became clear i had tied the laces a bit too tight. need to remember to keep them loose like the rides. really appreciated the spacious toe box, especially when negotiating hills. i did feel a lot of impact to the ball of my foot, especially the right foot.

for their first outing, these did just fine. not gonna displace my rides just yet though!

race report: freezer 5

this was my 25th road race but somehow only my first 5-miler. i was excited about this one for a few reasons. 1) it's put on by a local running club (not NYRR), 2) it's not in central park, and 3) i planned to go with a few teammates which is always more fun than going alone.

i picked up my running buddies at van cortlandt park, then we headed up to FDR park in yorktown. i had somehow never been there before even though it's in sean's hometown.

true to the race's name, it was FAH-REEZING out that morning, with a wicked wind to boot. we met a bunch more teammates at the park so VCTC was definitely representing. we all grabbed our bibs then waited as long as possible before ditching our extra layers and heading to the start.

did i mention it was COLD??

you have to love smaller races with no corrals and no delay before you cross the start! we were off, on a hilly but pretty course through the park.

saw a few walkers and dog walkers, and a small group of deer that must've gotten spooked by something. we did about a mile out and back along a lake, then 2 repeats of a 2 mile loop around the park with a brutal hill (ugh). was not looking forward to that the second time around. despite some ice on the course in a couple of spots, there were no major problems. totally uncrowded, no weaving to get around or getting stuck behind people. lovely! saw my teammate maryann ahead of me and almost caught her before she took off.

in the end, she finished 3rd in our AG and i was right behind her! other teammates took 3rd overall, 1st and 2nd females and a whole slew of AG awards. power to the purple!

i finished in 40:46 with a pace of 8:09 -- faster than my pace for my 10k PR so i happy about that. not bad for my first 5-miler! i like the distance, long enough to settle in but not long enough to wipe myself out.

after the awards ceremony, we celebrated a teammate's birthday with some cake then headed to the peekskill brewery to warm up!

caramelized onion & potato gratin

i contemplated the potatoes & onions loitering on my kitchen counter, mentally assessing their meal potential. or more specifically, their "lowest common denominator" meal potential. what reasonably tasty & healthy meal could i make with these components that would require the fewest additional ingredients? pot pie? better with chicken, which i didn't have on hand. eureka! gratin!

gratins are deceptively delicious, in the sense that they seem complicated and carry well-developed flavors but can in fact be accomplished in relatively little time with relatively little skill. you can make them with raw veggies that bake slowly, lusciously, in a velvety sauce, or you can use cooked veggies, whip up a sauce and/or topping and toss the whole thing under the broiler for a few minutes. both are good. this time, i went with the latter option.

i sliced any onions in my bowl that were shrinking from their outer skins and threatening to go soft and caramelized them slowly, adding a bit of butter towards the end to prevent sticking and enhance their color and flavor.

i peeled, sliced, boiled and drained the potatoes.

i made a quick bechamel sauce, adding a bit of yogurt and grating in some colby-jack cheese at the end just because they were in my fridge waiting for a purpose.

i tumbled the potatoes out into a baking dish, topped with onions, poured the bechamel+ over the whole thing. shook some breadcrumbs over the top, sprinkled with paprika, salt and pepper, and slid the whole dish under the broiler til the top got brown and the edges got bubbly.

aside from needing more salt & pepper, the result was quite satisfying, as was the improvisation that led to it.

cranberry orange bread

i was craving something sweet, and when i spotted this little gem of a christmas present in my cupboard and realized i had exactly 3 eggs in the fridge, the stars aligned.

IMG_0432

i added fresh orange zest and i subbed yogurt for the sour cream since i had it on hand, but otherwise followed the directions.

IMG_0433

the loaves rose beautifully and came out perfectly crusty outside and tender inside.

IMG_0435

slices were good plain, but even better toasted with a little butter...

race report: gridiron classic

the gridiron classic is a 4-mile race in central park that NYRR holds on superbowl sunday each year. this was my third time running it. in 2011 i finished in 35:05, last year was 32:12. this year i was just 19 seconds slower at 32:31. i had to stop and re-tie my shoelaces after one came undone just before the mile 3 marker, but i don't think i would have bettered last year's time anyway.

this is always a fun run despite the cold. this year it was about 25 degrees with light snow falling. luckily the snow was powdery and it didn't get too slippery.

nice race to start the year!
