Happy Thanksgiving! We went up to Westchester to visit family and I snapped a couple of pics while we were stuck in traffic, including this shot and my runner-up pic for today.
I'm not entirely happy with this picture, but I've tried several times to take some photos of these mini squashes, and this is the best I've been able to do. The gourds are piled in a basket on our dining table as a festive seasonal decoration.
We figure the guy with the hose is probably getting paid at least $25/hour.
Remember this poster? Well, it used to be on the demolished building whose remains you see here. I guess it's gone now. Good thing I took that pic when I did!
I'm not absolutely certain, but I think the runner in the blue shirt here is Martin Lel, who went on to win the NYC Marathon this year! More marathon pics here (and in Flickr).
Today was the NYC marathon. Gorgeous day. I love to go watch the marathon. I'm amazed by the sheer numbers of runners, many of whom write their names and the names of people for whom they are running on their shirts. I'm amazed by the outlay of city resources: police on duty, roads closed, sanitation workers doing overtime. I'm amazed by the enthusiasm and excitement of the crowd, shouting encouragement and cheering for runners they don't even know. It all makes me feel good about NYC, about people, about life.
Runners...
(I think I even snapped Martin Lel from Kenya, the men's winner! Click here to see.)
Cops...
Spectators...
P.S. I love the marathon so much, I am thinking about trying to run it myself. Maybe this would be a good goal for my 35th year of life (2009). We'll see.
I felt like I had taken a lot of pictures of my hibiscus plants, but when I looked back, there were onlytwo. So I think it's fine to post another one. I do like my hibiscus plants.
